Through real-life experiences, learners explore family dynamics, language access, Deaf culture, and the personal journeys that shape Deaf identity. This workshop strengthens ASL comprehension while deepening understanding of how family and community influence identity, belonging, and cultural pride.

By the end of this course, participants will demonstrate comprehension of Deaf Identity and Family concepts by accurately recognizing key vocabulary and factual details from the narratives, selecting correct summaries and explanations of family dynamics and communication barriers, and applying Deaf identity concepts in scenario-based questions.

Learners will also differentiate and compare family experiences across storytellers, evaluate how language access and family attitudes shaped identity development, and identify overarching themes that connect vocabulary, cultural values, and lived experiences across multiple narratives, as measured through a multiple-choice assessment. 

Recommended for intermediate or advanced ASL learners. This course is on-demand, with ASL videos with English captions.

Through engaging video lessons and culturally-rooted context, you’ll build confidence signing about diverse holidays and the traditions that make each one special.

By the end of this course, participants will demonstrate:

  • Comprehension of ASL vocabulary and culturally embedded holiday discourse by accurately recognizing key signs, cultural references, and factual details presented in the narratives; selecting accurate summaries and explanations of traditions, community practices, and celebratory norms; and applying culturally appropriate communication strategies to scenario-based questions.

This course explores the lived experiences of Deaf individuals across generations, highlighting how educational placement, communication access, and family dynamics shape Deaf identity.

Through personal narratives and case examples, participants will examine themes including oralism, mainstreaming, residential Deaf schools, language deprivation, multigenerational Deaf families, disability within disability (DeafBlindness and autism), and the role of ASL in academic and social development.

By the end of this course, participants will demonstrate comprehension of Deaf Culture and Education concepts by accurately recognizing key vocabulary, historical references, and factual details presented in the narratives; selecting accurate summaries and explanations of cultural values, educational systems, and communication access issues; and applying Deaf cultural frameworks to scenario-based questions.
